I read the book "A Healthy Society: How a Focus on Health Can Revive Canadian Democracy" by Ryan Meili.

I decided to read this book because it correlates with my current employment as an acute client care coordinator with CPAS at the Royal University Hospital in Saskatoon. There were numerous connections that I made with the cases and real stories of client that Ryan Meili shared. These reflected on some of my daily struggles that I, as an acute client care coordinator, face when trying to connect people with the proper (yet scarce) resources outside of the hospital to ensure safe discharge back into the community. Ryan displays some valuable tools and resources to navigate the health care system in our province, some that I find useful to implement in my employment.

Addictions and Mental Illness – Understanding the Relationship – Part 1 Webinar
Trainer: Sheri Coburn, MSW, RSW
This webinar highlights understanding co-occurring disorders as a spectrum of experience and looks specifically at the possible relationships between addictions and mental illness. The role that trauma can play in co-occurring disorders is also reviewed. Understanding this relationship between addictions and mental illness is key for caregivers to begin to assist in recovery.

Ministry of Social Services/ Child and Family Programs, Core training, Modules 5 and 6. Module 5 was entitled case work administration. We learned about PRIDE which is a model that MSS/CFP uses to recruit foster parents, manage their homes, monitor their progress and any issues or concerns around the care of the children. It is also the same model we use for adoptive families and people wanting to adopt children. Module 6 involves legal proceedings and the court process, which is centered around court orders for children and the types of things that happen when protection workers need to attend court.
MSS Core training is a seminar setting with a large group. There is lots of discussion and real world examples, videos, readings, and learning exercises/activities as well as some role playing.

I requested to be trained for a department in CPAS known as GRU - Geriatric Re-enablement Unit at Parkridge care facility in Saskatoon.

This unit is designed for seniors who require additional rehab post acute stay. Over the course of two days, my co-worker Kiera Hagg, who is the GRU coordinator, trained me how to work in this department. I went to the rounds, met the team and patients, and then assisted with the discharge planning. Many patients being discharged from GRU require additional CPAS services, such as home care and community services ie. physical, therapy, occupational therapy. My role is to complete an assessment and set up these services. After the training was completed, I than covered the caseload on my own while the regular coordinator was away.
